Honeycomb cellular shades are widely recognized as one of the best window treatments for insulation, noise reduction, and full blackout performance. Many homeowners invest in high-grade 100% blackout honeycomb fabrics, yet end up facing annoying edge light leakage after installation. Faint light streaks on left and right sides, glowing gaps at the top or bottom, and compromised sleeping darkness are extremely common issues.
The truth is: Fabric quality only determines 50% of blackout performance. Installation method and edge sealing solution determine the other half.
Even the thickest double-cell full blackout fabric cannot achieve true zero light leakage with incorrect mounting or missing light-sealing treatment. This blog will deeply analyze the core differences between inside mount and outside mount for honeycomb curtains, reveal the essential reasons for edge light leakage of blackout fabrics, and share professional light-seal side strip installation techniques and practical solutions to help users completely solve light leakage troubles.
1. Core Differences: Inside Mount vs Outside Mount for Honeycomb Shades
Mounting method is the primary factor affecting light leakage, aesthetics, window field of view and installation applicability. Inside mount and outside mount have completely different structural logics, applicable window types and performance advantages, with obvious trade-offs in light control and decoration effects.
1.1 Inside-Mount (Frame Internal Installation)
Inside mount means installing the entire honeycomb curtain inside the window frame, with the headrail and fabric body fully embedded in the window opening. It is the most popular installation method for modern minimalist home decoration due to its neat and built-in visual effect.
Pros of Inside Mount
- Superior Aesthetics: The curtain fits perfectly with the window frame without protruding from the wall surface, presenting a clean, integrated and high-end minimalist effect, which will not destroy the overall soft decoration style.
- Maximize Window View: It does not occupy the wall space around the window, retains the maximum window opening area, and ensures sufficient daylighting when the curtain is fully opened.
- Space Saving: No overlapping coverage on the window trim or wall, suitable for narrow wall windows and embedded window openings.
Cons of Inside Mount
- Inevitable Edge Light Leakage: This is the biggest flaw. To ensure the honeycomb curtain lifts and lowers smoothly without scratching the window frame, manufacturers will reserve a 3–8mm gap on both sides of the fabric. This reserved gap is the fundamental cause of side light leakage, and even full blackout fabrics cannot avoid it.
- Strict Window Requirements: It requires sufficient window frame depth (minimum 60–80mm) and standard square window openings. Inclined, deformed or shallow window frames cannot be installed normally.
- Weak Light & Heat Insulation: The side gaps form air convection channels, which not only leak light but also weaken the overall heat insulation and noise reduction performance of honeycomb curtains.
Applicable Scenarios: Living room, study, aisle windows and other areas with low blackout requirements, pursuing minimalist and neat window decoration effect, with standard deep window frames.
1.2 Outside-Mount (External Overlap Installation)
Outside mount refers to installing the curtain headrail above the window opening, with the fabric body completely covering the window opening and overlapping the window frame and surrounding wall surfaces. It is the preferred installation method for scenes with high blackout demands.
Pros of Outside Mount
- Excellent Light Blocking Effect: The fabric overlaps 3–5cm on left, right, top and bottom of the window opening, completely covering the original gap of the window frame, fundamentally eliminating side and top light leakage.
- Low Window Adaptation Requirements: No limit on window frame depth, suitable for shallow windows, inclined windows, irregular windows and window openings without standard frames.
- Optical Window Enlargement: External covering can visually stretch the window size, make small windows look more atmospheric, and optimize the overall spatial proportion.
- Enhanced Heat Insulation: The overall overlapping coverage seals the window gap, blocks air convection, and gives full play to the hollow heat insulation advantage of honeycomb fabrics.
Cons of Outside Mount
- Slightly Bulky Visual: The curtain covers part of the wall surface, losing the built-in delicate sense of inside mount, which may affect the minimalist style of individual spaces.
- Larger Stacking Occupation: The top stacking height occupies part of the upper wall space, requiring a certain installation space above the window.
Applicable Scenarios: Bedroom, nursery, home theater, sun room and other areas requiring full blackout, constant temperature and noise reduction; all shallow windows and irregular window openings.
2. Why Do Premium Full Blackout Honeycomb Fabrics Still Leak Light?
Most users have a misunderstanding: they believe that purchasing high-density full blackout honeycomb fabrics (99.9% shading rate) can achieve zero light leakage. In fact, fabric shading rate is for the fabric itself, while light leakage mostly occurs in structural gaps, not the fabric body. There are three essential reasons for unavoidable light leakage of full blackout curtains under conventional installation.
2.1 Reserved Operating Clearance (Core Industry Reason)
Honeycomb curtains are flexible hollow fabric structures. If the fabric is completely closely attached to the window frame without gaps, friction will occur during lifting and lowering, causing fabric wear, jamming, and even deformation of the honeycomb structure. Therefore, all formal manufacturers will uniformly reserve 3–8mm movable gaps on both sides of the curtain width. This tiny gap is a necessary industrial design for normal use and the main source of side light leakage.
2.2 Window Frame Construction Errors & Irregularities
Few window openings are absolutely standard square. Most household windows have invisible errors such as left-right inclination, upper-lower deviation and uneven wall surfaces. For inside mount curtains installed according to standard sizes, the gaps will be uneven due to window deformation, resulting in obvious local light leakage. Even high-precision customized fabrics cannot offset the errors of civil construction.
2.3 Structural Gaps of Headrail & Bottom Rail
The assembly gaps of the upper headrail and the window top, and the fitting gaps of the bottom rail and the window sill are also hidden light leakage points. Especially for cordless honeycomb curtains, the elastic lifting structure will produce tiny gaps after long-term use, leading to top and bottom light transmission. These structural gaps have nothing to do with fabric quality, so pure blackout fabric upgrade cannot solve the problem.
3. Light-Seal Side Stripes: Practical Operation to Completely Solve Edge Light Leakage
For users who pursue neat inside mount aesthetics and full blackout effect at the same time, outside mount cannot replace inside mount. At this time, light-seal side sealing strips are the most effective and mature solution, which can perfectly eliminate side gaps without changing the installation mode. The following are two mainstream practical installation schemes suitable for new installation and later modification.
3.1 L-Type Aluminum Alloy Light-Seal Strip (Suitable for Finished Curtain Modification)
This is the most widely used universal solution, suitable for installed inside mount honeycomb curtains with side light leakage. The L-type light-seal strip is made of lightweight aluminum alloy with soft shading wool strips on the inner side. It is fixed on the inner side of the window frame through self-adhesive or screw fixing, forming a closed barrier at the fabric moving gap.
Practical Installation Steps
First, clean the dust and oil on the inner side of the window frame to ensure a flat and clean bonding surface. Second, measure the effective height of the window frame and cut the light-seal strip to the matching size. Then tear off the back adhesive, paste the strip vertically on the left and right sides of the window frame, and ensure the inner wool strip is slightly in contact with the curtain fabric (not tightly pressed to avoid affecting lifting). Finally, press and fix it for 3–5 minutes to ensure firm fitting.
Advantages: No disassembly of the original curtain, simple construction, low cost, no damage to the window frame, effective shading rate up to 99.9%, and durable without aging.
3.2 U-Type Embedded Light-Seal Groove (Suitable for New Decoration Pre-Embedding)
For users in the woodworking stage of new decoration, pre-embedding U-type light-seal grooves is a higher-grade seamless shading solution. The light-seal groove is embedded on both sides of the window frame in advance, and the honeycomb curtain fabric runs in the groove track after installation. The groove structure completely covers the side moving gap, realizing truly zero light leakage and integrated seamless effect.
Construction Key Points
Reserve 10–15mm installation groove position on both sides of the window frame during woodworking construction. Fix the U-type light-seal groove with shooting nails, and paste shading wool inside the groove. Customize the curtain size according to the groove spacing to ensure the fabric runs smoothly in the groove without jamming. This scheme completely eliminates light leakage from the source, with the best appearance and shading effect.
3.3 Top & Bottom Light Leakage Auxiliary Solutions
Cooperate with top light-seal adhesive strips and bottom weighted shading strips to seal the headrail gap and window sill gap. The full set of side-top-bottom sealing treatment can make the inside mount honeycomb curtain reach the blackout level of outside mount, which is completely suitable for bedroom and home theater high-standard blackout scenes.
4. Mounting & Sealing Selection Cheat Sheet
1. Pursue neat appearance + ordinary daylighting demand: Choose inside mount, no need for full sealing, acceptable tiny light transmission.
2. High blackout demand + new decoration: Inside mount + pre-embedded U-type light-seal groove, seamless and high-grade.
3. Installed curtains + light leakage remediation: Inside mount + L-type light-seal side strips, simple and effective.
4. Irregular windows + extreme blackout: Priority outside mount with widened overlapping size.
5. Final Summary
The light leakage problem of honeycomb curtains is never a fabric problem, but a mounting structure and gap sealing problem. Inside mount is beautiful but has reserved movable gaps leading to light leakage, while outside mount has excellent shading but slightly ordinary appearance. No matter how high the shading rate of the blackout fabric is, it cannot offset the light transmission of structural gaps.
Through targeted matching of inside/outside mounting modes and professional light-seal side sealing technologies, users can perfectly balance appearance, light control, heat insulation and practicality. Reasonable installation and sealing transformation can maximize the performance of high-quality honeycomb curtains, creating a truly constant-temperature, silent and fully blackout comfortable indoor environment.
